PLANTS OVER PLASTIC! PLANTS OVER PLASTIC! PLANTS OVER PLASTIC! It’s a rallying cry I would love to shout from the tops of mountains and the rooves of tall buildings. Fortunately, I don’t have to, as Repurpose is doing the work keeping our households eco-friendly. It’s the number one selling brand at Whole Foods for trash bags, and they really are the best!
This woman-led company is on a mission, besides providing strong, durable products with a low carbon footprint, Repurpose has:
- Replaced 436 million pieces of plastic
- Up to 80% fewer C)2 emissions
- Up to 65% less energy
- Up to 60% less waste
- Products developed for a circular economy
That’s quite impressive, but so are the extra strong compostable plant (PLA) and plastic (PBAT) bags that last for months instead of 1000 years on the planet. We were sent three Repurpose products to try and put to the test: two different sizes of trash bags and kid’s dinner set.
Repurpose 3 Gallon Compostable Small Bin Trash Bags
Perfect for smaller trash can, like in the bathroom or compost bin, these super sturdy bags retain their shape and don’t disappoint. Pulling as hard as I can, I can not tear or break them, which cannot be said for traditional plastic trash bags. The Repurpose bags are Biodegradable Products Institute (BPI) Certified meaning consumers can trust that they have been third party certified and aren’t simply self-declared by the company that the bags will return to the earth in a timely manner.
Repurpose 13 Gallon Compostable Trash Bags
Similar to the three gallon version, these trash bags are designed for your tall kitchen receptacle. After reading some reviews, I decided to put them to another tear test. They do tear easily vertically (from the top opening down), but when pulled sideways, they continue to stretch and stretch without breaking. Frankly, this is what you want from a garbage bag as you stuff it full of waste. I don’t think they are any more fragile than traditional plastic kitchen trash bags.
In addition to the various trash bags, we were sent the Repurpose Kid’s Dinner Set.
Repurpose Kid’s Dinner Set
Made from plants, dishwasher safe, microwave safe, non-toxic….the Repurpose Kid’s Dinner Set is perfect for the little ones. Corn, beets, and bamboo are the materials used to create these practical kid’s dishes that are perfect for any toddler who likes to explore gravity by throwing their dishes on the ground.
Most plastics are contain toxic compounds such as PVC, PBDEs, BPAs, and Phthalates. Furthermore, only Only 9% of the world’s plastic has ever been recycled! Plastics are notoriously hard to recycle, as the need to be sorted by the different materials and processing facilities are few and far between. In addition, it’s cheaper to actually create new plastics than to recycle them. The plastic environmental problem is huge, and unfortunately recycling is not much of an answer. Choosing plant-based plastics eliminates much of the problem, especially considering landfill issues.
While it’s important to recycle glass instead of pitching it, keeping plastic out of the landfill is even more vital. Why? Because glass doesn’t discharge any harmful components as it decomposes while plastic releases an abundance of toxic chemicals.
Not only does plastic release toxic chemicals as it degrades, it does so slowly, over a period of hundreds of years. Items like plastic toothbrushes, cups, and coffee pods can take up to 500 years to decompose. Even a thin plastic bag can require 20 years or more to completely break down.
This fun kid’s dinner set comes with a cup, bowl, divided plate, and tray making it easy for kids to carry their own food from table to sink or at a family BBQ. They also would be perfect for a camping trip.
In conclusion, Repurpose is a fun company committed to offering safe alternatives to single-use plastic items. They company is creating quality plant-basted products to lessen our environmental impacts. Using compostable plastics is one easy step we can take to keep our families and planet healthy.
