Live a greener, healthier life!

Two Green Books: Not Just For Parents

I just finished reading The Mom’s Guide to Growing Your Family Green. I’ve got one word for you.

Yipee!

Finally, there’s a book for moms who are looking to go green that doesn’t make them feel like a failure. I’ve always been pretty green. It was recent that I realized that a lot of my peers don’t think about sustainable living. I’d just assumed that everyone went through the same processes that I did.

What I didn’t realize is that a lot of women (especially parents) felt like they had to do everything. By “everything” I mean everything from green cleaning products to the diva cup to growing their own food, and by being made to feel like a perennial failure, many parents are unwilling to attempt any part of a sustainable life, for fear of being mocked.

Terra Wellington successfully put together a highly readable (code for palatable and pretty) how to guide for parents. She suspends judgment and gives tips, tables and tutorials on how to green your home. While reading, I felt gently coaxed and never nagged. I also felt inspired.

She also gives you “why”. The Mom’s Guide is compelling without using scare tactics or manipulation. Every page is full of great information, and since it’s a paperback, you can carry it around with you for reference. There are charts and tables that you can mark up and fill in to get you started.

If you’re looking for a little more reading do not miss The Green Collar Economy. As I sat reading it, I realized that it was absolutely prophetic. With a 2008 publication date, the book has nailed current economic trends. Further, it offers answers.

If Van Jones is astute enough to forecast our current predicament, then I think we’d all better listen up when he offers solutions. Buy a copy and send it to your local politician, this is how the stimulus money ought to be spent.

My gift to you; two terrific books. Enjoy them.
